Vegetarian, veggie and fish tacos are still the most popular meal options in many U.S. restaurants.
But the number of veggie options is slowly dropping.
In 2016, vegans, vegetarians and vegans-only patrons made up 4.5 percent of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization’s total, according to a report from the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in November.
This dropped to 2.9 percent in 2017, down from 3.2 percent in 2016.
In 2019, there were only about 6.3 million people who were vegan or vegetarian, down slightly from about 7 million in 2017.
The report noted that “a majority of the global population is vegetarian or vegan.”
For those seeking more protein and less carbs, a handful of popular tacos, such as tacos with avocado, guacamole and a veggie taco, are also vegan options.
And there’s no denying the appeal of burgers and other fast-food favorites.
